Gambro's latest hemodialysis innovation the Artis™ system addresses unmet needs by integrating human factor design; a pioneering approach.

This week, at European Renal Association - European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA-EDTA) Congress in Stockholm, Gambro introduces the Artis™ system, a new generation of hemodialysis (HD). The Artis™ system is developed to address growing patient populations that require a higher level of care and more effective treatment delivery. Gambro's 40 years of pioneering research in chronic renal care takes a unique path by integrating human factor design in every step of the dialysis treatment with the new Artis™ monitor.

Artis“Gambro is a pioneer in the dialysis industry for more than 40 years. Today we are introducing yet another innovation; the Artis™ system, a state of the art hemodialysis system which also incorporates human factor design.” says Thomas Glanzmann, CEO and President of Gambro.

Unique individual adaptation
Knowing that every patient is unique, the Artis™ system can be adapted to any treatment strategy and prescription, from conventional, high flux to advanced online hemodialysis therapies. The Artis™ system includes an intelligent regulation system allowing for continuous therapy adjustments to the status of the patient for better comfort and more consistent delivery of the prescription.

Technology designed with health care professionals in mind
Caring for medically unstable patients is demanding and stressful, posing a daily challenge to renal care professionals. In this environment, user-friendliness takes on a new level of importance – even the most complex equipment must be simple and safe to operate. To address this challenge, Gambro has with the Artis™ system utilized a user-centered design process, i.e. human factor design. Human factor design secures high-quality user interactions with systems and products and leads to effective medical treatment as well as improves the user experience for care givers.
The ease of learning and usability are further enhanced by a touch-screen interface, placing the user in control and facilitating the decision-making process. A unique and innovative blood circuit has been designed for the extracorporeal blood circulation, significantly reducing the number of user actions and risks of misuse. The location and the design of each component have been carefully studied, ensuring intuitive and efficient handling. All of these innovations contribute to a better user experience. The Artis™ monitor will also improve the daily working environment with a human touch design.

The Artis™ system has been well received by the clinicians who have already had an opportunity to use the system. ”My overall impression is very positive. The design is clean and the large screen allows me to monitor the treatment even when I am not close to the machine. It was very easy to learn how to use the system and the installation procedure of the new blood module will significantly reduce the time to prepare the machine for treatment.” said one renal nurse after first sessions performed with the Artis™ system.

The Artis™ monitor is CE Marked and will be available in Western European countries and Canada by the end of 2008. The Artis™ system will then gradually be introduced globally.

About hemodialysis
Hemodialysis (HD), when used as a collective term for all extracorporeal dialysis therapies, hemodialysis, hemodiafiltration and hemofiltration, accounts for approximately 88 percent of all chronic dialysis patients worldwide. Given the access to blood, no patient is excluded from hemodialysis, and the possibilities for individualization are great.
