In Automated Peritoneal Dialysis (APD) a machine called a cycler is used to introduce and drain the dialysis fluid. The procedure usually takes place overnight, while the patient is asleep. The personal prescription can be programmed into the machine, using a patient card. This card also allows the medical staff to monitor the treatment and progress when the patient visits the hospital.
Higher volumes of fluid can be used in an APD because the patient is lying down during exchanges.
