The patient has the choice to decide to be treated either in a satellite unit or at home. In a satellite unit the patient often takes a more active role than at an In-center unit. A dialysis nurse supervises the treatment itself, but the patient may assist in the preparation of the treatment. Satellite units are often smaller and the atmosphere is more like being at home. They may offer dialysis during the evening for patients who work. Satellite care is suitable for patients who are in good general health, and don’t need the service and care of a main renal unit at a hospital.
Hemodialysis can also be carried out at home. For many patients, home dialysis means major benefits; it brings more flexibility and independence. The dialysis schedule can be adapted to individual lifestyles and may not interfere with the patient’s work. In Home Care HD the patient must be willing and able to take full responsibility for the treatment. The assistance of a partner or assistant could sometimes be necessary. The patient requires several weeks of special training in the different procedures. A dedicated room or space is needed at home for the machines and the disposables.
