Treatment options

When the renal function deteriorates, disorders will develop in most major body system, this syndrome is referred to as uremia. Before 1960 all patients suffering from chronic renal failure died from uremia. When only 5 percent of the kidney function remains, it will be necessary to start dialysis treatment.

Initially the goal of treatment for kidney failure is to prevent or slow additional damage to the kidney. The treatment could be to control the disease that is causing the failure. This might include putting you on diet, initiating an exercise program, or making you stop smoking or using alcohol and other drugs.

When treating kidney failure medically there are different options. Dialysis is a process in which the blood is cleansed artificially. There are two different dialysis methods – Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) and Hemodialysis (HD). Transplantation of a healthy kidney is always an option even for patients who have not yet started with dialysis.
