Gambro launches the next generation of high-flux dialyzers with Polyflux Revaclear and Polyflux Revaclear MAX

DENVER, Colo. — Gambro, a leader in advancing dialyzer technology for more than 40 years, announced today that it is introducing the latest innovation in dialyzer technology — Polyflux® Revaclear and Polyflux® Revaclear MAX. The Polyflux Revaclear dialyzers feature a proprietary membrane technology and an advanced design, which combine to deliver outstanding clinical performance for treatment of dialysis patients. Polyflux Revaclear and Polyflux Revaclear MAX will be broadly available in United States and Canada during first quarter of 2009.

“The new Polyflux Revaclear dialyzers exemplify Gambro’s commitment to delivering innovative products that provide value and dialysis delivery for providers and patients,” said Juan Bosch, M.D., Chief Medical Officer for Gambro. “Polyflux Revaclear combines the proven performance of the Polyflux dialyzer with an advanced design that delivers outstanding clinical results in an economically and environmentally sensible package.”

New Membrane and Innovative Design
The Polyflux Revaclear and Polyflux Revaclear MAX high-flux dialyzers feature a new membrane that is more efficient and more selective while retaining the same proven 3-layer membrane structure as the existing Polyflux dialyzer. The membrane is composed of a unique blend of the polymers PAES (Polyarylethersulfone) and PVP (Polyvinylpyrrolidone).
Studies have demonstrated that the Revaclear dialyzers’ advanced design offers enhanced performance with a smaller, smoother membrane surface, with the potential to improve patient outcomes and efficiencies for providers:

A smoother membrane surface area results in reduced thrombogenic potential

Improved hollow fiber geometry, with thinner fibers, allows Revaclear MAX to achieve the same degree of solute clearance as the original Polyflux, despite a significant reduction in membrane surface area.

A β2-microglobulin clearance that results in significant potential for lowering β2-microglobulin levels which may help to reduce morbidity and mortality in patients.1

Improved device design provides a uniform flow distribution in both the blood and dialysate compartments, contributing to enhanced solute clearance and low thrombogenicity.2

The design and performance ensure that all adult patients can be treated using only two sizes of dialyzers — (Polyflux Revaclear (1.4m2) and Polyflux Revaclear MAX (1.8m2).
The Revaclear dialyzers’ advanced and efficient design is also more economical and a reduced environmental impact than the original Polyflux. The Revaclear dialyzers are smaller and therefore require less material and energy consumption in manufacturing. Their compact design also can help reduce transportation, storage and biohazardous waste-disposal costs.

For more information about the Polyflux Revaclear products and other Gambro solutions for delivering in-center hemodialysis please contact:
Anne Bonelli, Director of Marketing Communications, Americas Tel: +1 (303) 231-4671

Gambro Receives 510(k) Clearance for Prismaflex® System 3.20 Software

Gambro has received 510(k) clearance for the Prismaflex® System 3.20 software, a state-of-the-art platform for delivering Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT). The new software provides improved functionality and enhanced safety features, including enhanced weight management alarms, simplified user interface, enhanced flow rate controls and scale calibration, and improved heparin syringe installation.

“The new, innovative Prismaflex System is designed to improve patient safety and nursing efficiency when performing CRRT,” said Tom Poholsky, Gambro Vice President of Intensive Care. “Our customers have been looking for a platform that provides the flexibility to perform future extracorporeal treatments and this system meets that need.”

Gambro is the pioneer and world leader in the treatment of intensive care unit (ICU) patients with acute renal failure. The Prisma® System, launched in 1995 in Europe and 1997 in the U.S., was the first automated, integrated system specifically designed to perform the complete range of continuous renal replacement therapies for critically ill patients.

The Prismaflex System is the next generation system for CRRT. The Prismaflex System has been designed to provide the flexibility needed to evolve with the scientific evidence supporting the prescription for CRRT.

To date, the Prisma and Prismaflex Systems have provided hundreds of thousands of patients with life-saving CRRT treatments worldwide.
Gambro provides customers with everything they need for a successful CRRT program: equipment, disposables, solutions and live, 24/7 customer support.

About CRRT
Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) takes over some functions of the kidneys after they have been damaged acutely by lack of blood flow, trauma, or other causes. CRRT is performed in an intensive care unit of a hospital, where a nurse is in constant attendance and every aspect of the therapy, including blood pressure, urine output and blood samples, is monitored by health care professionals.

Gambro receives regulatory approval for its Molecular Adsorbents Recirculating System (MARS®) in China

Gambro has successfully re-registered its MARS® System with Chinese authorities after several months’ absence from the Chinese market.

Gambro’s Molecular Adsorbents Recirculating System® (MARS®) Therapy is a blood detoxification system used in conjunction with an extracorporeal device (a Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy -CRRT- or dialysis device) for the treatment of liver decompensation. MARS® Therapy uses albumin as the primary agent for removing dialyzable toxins.

“The MARS® Therapy is part of Gambro’s growth strategy in China,” says Stuart Paul, President APAC in Gambro. “Being a worldwide market leader for extracorporeal blood purification therapies in the intensive care area, the MARS® Therapy strengthens Gambro’s position by providing a new therapeutic approach for acute liver failure and acute or chronic liver failure. I am convinced that the MARS® Therapy will add a lot of value to our customers and their patients in China.”

The MARS® Therapy will be available in China in October 2007.

About the MARS® Therapy
During MARS® Therapy, a patient is connected to the MARS® monitor which is connected to a Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) system like the Gambro Prisma® system, or a dialysis equipment like the AK200® or AK200 ultra®. Based on a process called albumin dialysis, the MARS® adsorbers removes albumin bound toxins together with hydrosuloble toxins through membrane filters.
