Denver – Gambro is working with its distributor, Bionuclear, in cooperation with the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Health and Nephrology Society to establish a temporary dialysis clinic in Jimani, a city close to the Haiti border.

Gambro is donating five portable water treatment systems along with dialyzers, bloodlines, concentrates and blood access products. Bionuclear is donating Gambro AK 95 dialysis machines. The dialysis equipment will be installed at the Hospital Buen Samaritano in Jimani, Dominican Republic.

The clinic will treat an estimated 15 to 20 patients suffering from trauma or crash injuries as a result of the earthquake. The clinic is expected to run for four to five months.

“We are working closely with our distributor and the authorities in Dominican Republic to establish this dialysis clinic,” said Nick Mendez, President of Gambro Americas. “We know Haitians are in desperate need for medical treatment, including dialysis, and this clinic is an important first step to helping those who are suffering.”

Gambro is also sending staff from the U.S. to support the clinic.

New Membrane and Innovative Design
The Polyflux Revaclear and Polyflux Revaclear MAX high-flux dialyzers feature a new membrane that is more efficient and more selective while retaining the same proven 3-layer membrane structure as the existing Polyflux dialyzer. The membrane is composed of a unique blend of the polymers PAES (Polyarylethersulfone) and PVP (Polyvinylpyrrolidone).
Studies have demonstrated that the Revaclear dialyzers’ advanced design offers enhanced performance with a smaller, smoother membrane surface, with the potential to improve patient outcomes and efficiencies for providers:

A smoother membrane surface area results in reduced thrombogenic potential
Improved hollow fiber geometry, with thinner fibers, allows Revaclear MAX to achieve the same degree of solute clearance as the original Polyflux, despite a significant reduction in membrane surface area.
A β2-microglobulin clearance that results in significant potential for lowering β2-microglobulin levels which may help to reduce morbidity and mortality in patients.1
Improved device design provides a uniform flow distribution in both the blood and dialysate compartments, contributing to enhanced solute clearance and low thrombogenicity.2

The design and performance ensure that all adult patients can be treated using only two sizes of dialyzers — (Polyflux Revaclear (1.4m2) and Polyflux Revaclear MAX (1.8m2).
The Revaclear dialyzers’ advanced and efficient design is also more economical and a reduced environmental impact than the original Polyflux. The Revaclear dialyzers are smaller and therefore require less material and energy consumption in manufacturing. Their compact design also can help reduce transportation, storage and biohazardous waste-disposal costs.

Gambro has successfully re-registered its MARS® System with Chinese authorities after several months’ absence from the Chinese market.

Gambro’s Molecular Adsorbents Recirculating System® (MARS®) Therapy is a blood detoxification system used in conjunction with an extracorporeal device (a Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy -CRRT- or dialysis device) for the treatment of liver decompensation. MARS® Therapy uses albumin as the primary agent for removing dialyzable toxins.

About the MARS® Therapy
