Gambro makes the strategic decision to focus on its core businesses and sell its global PD business to Fresenius Medical Care

Press Release

Gambro and Fresenius today announced that they have signed a framework agreement for the sale of Gambro’s global peritoneal dialysis (PD) business and related assets.

Under the terms of the agreement, Fresenius Medical Care (FME) will acquire Gambro’s global PD business, including a product portfolio currently in use by more than 4000 patients in over 25 countries. The transaction includes a long-term supply agreement with Gambro’s solutions manufacturing facility in YongIn, Korea. Subject to relevant work council consultations, it is intended that the transaction will also include Gambro’s solutions manufacturing facility in Canosa, Italy.  FME will offer on-going employment opportunities for PD dedicated Gambro employees.

“This transaction allows us to prioritize our investments in the areas where we believe we have the biggest opportunities to create the most value, for our customers and our company. Focusing on our core HD business including the home segment, is a strategic priority for us and an integral part of our growth strategy.” says Francisco Canal, President Gambro Chronic Business Unit. “We are committed to invest in innovations that will allow physicians to individualize patient-care for an optimal dialysis therapy delivery.”

Gambro believes FME will be a value adding owner of Gambro’s PD business, which further supports Gambro’s decision to prioritize its investments in the hemodialysis (HD) market.

“We see strong potential both in our Chronic HD business as well as within our Acute segment where we today are the market leader. This is an exciting time as we continue to focus and build an even stronger Company for the future.” says Thomas Glanzmann, Gambro President and CEO. “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated employees who have built a strong PD business over the years. With Fresenius Medical Care as the new owner, they will have the opportunity to continue to develop this business.”

The transaction is subject to necessary regulatory and other approvals as well as relevant work council consultations. Both companies expect the acquisition to close before the end of the year.
